Augsburg blanks women's hockey in series opener

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – A pair of second-period goals were enough to give visiting Augsburg University a 2-0 victory over the St. Olaf College women's hockey team in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action on Friday night at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

Augsburg (4-4-1, 3-1-1 MIAC), which received a vote in this week's DCU/USCHO Division III Women's Poll, broke open a scoreless game with second-period goals by Payton Allen and Emily Cronkhite and got a 23-save shutout from Marissa Paaske to deal St. Olaf (5-4-1, 3-2-0 MIAC) its first shutout loss of the season. The Oles had 15 of the 23 shots on goal in the game in the third period but were unable to find a breakthrough.

The Auggies, who have three losses against top-10 opponents and own a win over current No. 2-ranked UW-River Falls, opened the scoring at 11:14 of the second period when Allen scored on a rebound into a wide open net after first year Hannah Fritz made a save to deny Nora Stepan. With time winding down in the period, Augsburg doubled its lead after Cronkhite scored on a breakaway after getting behind the St. Olaf defense on what started as a 2-on-1 rush.

After being limited to eight shots on goal through 40 minutes, the Oles made a push in the third period but were unable to find a way past Paaske. St. Olaf generated five shots on goal on a power play that started at the 6:36 mark and two more on a shortened power play at the 12:00 mark.

Fritz allowed two or fewer goals for the fourth time this season and finished the night with 24 saves. Augsburg enjoyed a 26-23 advantage in shots on goal in the game, while St. Olaf won 28 of the game's 48 faceoffs.

The Oles and Auggies complete their series on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 3 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis.
