NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The visiting Milwaukee School of Engineering scored the final four goals of the game to send the St. Olaf College men's hockey team to a 5-2 Senior Night loss on Friday night at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
St. Olaf (8-3-1) led 2-1 after the first period before MSOE (8-4-0) scored a pair of power-play goals in the second period and added two more in the third to pick up the win in the first meeting between the two programs since Jan. 20, 2001. Sophomores
Sean Walsh and
Jonathan Young scored in the loss for the Oles.
Before the game, St. Olaf honored its four-man senior class of
Raymond Fleming,
Evan Shoemaker,
Ashton Altmann, and
Sean Salz for their dedication to the program over the last four years. The loss was just the second in the last 10 games for the Oles, who received votes in this week's DCU/USCHO.com Division III Men's Ice Hockey Poll.
The visitors got on the board first on Christian Sabin's first of two goals in the game, as he put home a shot after a shot by Matt Hanewall produced a rebound at the 4:27 mark of the opening period. St. Olaf tied the game less than two minutes later, however, when Walsh scored his fourth goal of the season on a breakaway caused by a deflection by sophomore
Troy Bowditch.
The Oles grabbed a 2-1 lead at 12:04 of the first period on Young's third goal in the last two games. The reigning Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Hockey Offensive Player of the Week put home a rebound after first year
Pavel Karasek drew a save from Nick Stofcheck, with junior
Luke Suter also picking up an assist on the goal for his first assist of the season.
In the second period, the Raiders scored a pair of power-play goals to take the lead for good, getting goals on the man advantage from Sabin early in the period and Gramm McCormack late in the period. MSOE added two more goals from Cole Beilke and McCormack three minutes apart in the final seven minutes of the game.
The Raiders were 2-for-5 on the power play in the game and killed off both of the penalties they committed. MSOE held a 22-18 advantage in shots on goal and blocked 17 shots in the win, as Stofcheck picked up the victory with a 16-save night. First year
Tyler Laureault made 17 saves in suffering the loss.
