Women's hockey takes opener from UW-Superior for Johnson's 100th win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – First year Solvei Berg-Messerole had a hand in all three goals, as the St. Olaf College women's hockey team delivered the 100th victory of head coach Tracy Johnson's career with a 3-1 win over non-conference foe UW-Superior on Friday at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

Berg-Messerole scored twice and added an assist to guide St. Olaf (6-5-1) to the win in the series opener with UW-Superior (4-6-0), while junior Lexie Ligday had a goal and an assist and fifth-year senior Annika Patterson added a pair of assists. With the victory, Johnson reached the 100-win milestone for her career, picking up her 15th win at St. Olaf in addition to 85 victories at Stevenson University.

The Yellowjackets got on the board first on a goal by Anna Scherling at the 4:13 mark of the opening period, scoring on their second shot on goal of the game. The early goal was the lone shot that evaded first year Carley Tuman, who picked up her first collegiate victory in her first-career start by saving 15 of the 16 shots she faced.

UW-Superior held onto its lead for just over 10 minutes before Berg-Messerole evened the game at 1-1 with her first goal of the game at 15:36 of the first period. The first year collected the puck, spun, and shot from the inner edge of the right circle off assists from Ligday and sophomore Iona Welsch to knot the score after 20 minutes.

The Oles tallied the eventual game-winning goal on their second power play of the second period, as Ligday picked out the top-right corner from the top of the left circle after being set up by Patterson and Berg-Messerole. The goal was the first of Ligday's career.

After leading 2-1 at the second intermission, St. Olaf added an insurance goal on the power play at 17:25 of the third period when Berg-Messerole scored from the middle of the right circle after getting the puck from sophomore Hannah Metric and Patterson. The three-point matched Berg-Messerole's highest point total of the season and brought her team-leading total to nine points on five goals and four assists.

By going 2-for-6 on the power play, St. Olaf has now scored half of its 26 goals on the power play this season. The Oles also committed just one penalty in the game and did not allow the Yellowjackets to register a shot on goal on their second-period power play.

St. Olaf nearly doubled up UW-Superior in the shot count, holding a 31-16 advantage over the 60 minutes. Molly Black recorded 28 saves in net for the Yellowjackets in the loss.

The two teams wrap up their series on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. at Siinto S. Wessman Arena in Superior, Wis.
