Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball stays hot, shoots past Knights for sixth-straight win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's basketball team had five scorers in double figures and shot 57.6 percent from the field while picking up its sixth-straight victory with an 82-69 win over crosstown-rival Carleton College on Saturday afternoon at West Gym.

St. Olaf (14-9, 10-8 MIAC) got a team-high 24 points from senior Dominic Bledsoe and 18 points and eight assists from sophomore Connor Martin in the win over Carleton (14-6, 11-5 MIAC), which had already secured possession of the Goat by winning the first meeting between the rivals last month. The Oles have now defeated the top-three teams in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) standings in the last eight days and have assured themselves of a top-six seed in the MIAC Playoffs.

The 13-point margin of victory was St. Olaf's largest in a win at Carleton since a 98-80 win on Feb. 22, 1979. The Oles' six-game winning streak is the program's longest since also winning six games in a row from Nov. 24, 2018 through Jan. 2, 2019.

St. Olaf  shot over 50.0 percent from the field for the fourth time in the last seven games, finishing the game 34-for-59 (57.6 percent) from the field as a team.

Bledsoe was 9-for-13 from the field, including 3-for-5 from behind the arc, and 3-for-3 at the free-throw line in his seventh 20-plus-point performance of the season. Martin went 8-for-12 from the field to reach double figures for the 16th game in a row while handing out eight assists as well.

Senior Nathan Hendler and juniors Michael Meriggioli and Charlie Haff were also in double figures and approached double-doubles. Hendler recorded 12 points and seven rebounds, Meriggioli had 11 points and eight rebounds, and Haff added 10 points and seven boards.

St. Olaf committed just eight turnovers in the game and held a 20-0 advantage in points off turnovers. The Oles also held a commanding 48-26 advantage in points in the paint.

Carleton made three of its first four shots of the game to take a 6-2 lead three minutes in, but St. Olaf responded by making six-straight shots of its own in a 15-3 run to go ahead 17-9. Bledsoe made back-to-back three-pointers in the run that ended with back-to-back layups by Martin.

The Oles built their largest lead of the opening half at 28-14 with 9:09 to go after a layup by junior Josh Albers. The Knights cut their deficit to six twice towards the end of the half, but Bledsoe capped a 15-point first half with a three-pointer with 1:02 left to help St. Olaf to a 45-34 halftime lead. Bledsoe and Martin combined for 27 first-half points as the Oles shot 63.3 percent (19-for-30) from the field in the first 20 minutes.

Early in the second half, Carleton whittled the St. Olaf lead to 52-46 with 14:52 to go as Jeremy Beckler hit a pair of early three-pointers. The Oles responded with an 8-0 run that included a three-pointer by Meriggioli and a three-point play by Bledsoe to push its lead to 14 and led by double figures the rest of the way.

Jeremy Beckler scored a game-high 26 points for Carleton, hitting 6-of-10 shots from three-point range while shooting 9-for-19 from the field. Luke Harris was the only other Knight in double figures with 14 points.

St. Olaf hosts Bethel for Senior Night on Valentine's Day on Monday, Feb. 14 at 7:45 p.m. following the women's game.
