Women's tennis eases past Hamline for first win

OWATONNA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team eased to an 8-1 victory over Hamline University to pick up its first victory of the season on Friday evening at West Hills Tennis & Fitness Center.

St. Olaf (1-2, 1-1 MIAC) dropped just two games in the two contested doubles matches and three games in its four singles victories to roll past Hamline (0-5, 0-2 MIAC). The Pipers defaulted the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles spots due to a lack of players.

Seniors Christiana Cholakis and Teresa Fawcett gave the Oles their first point with an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles before first year Olha Zubarieva and sophomore Anna Secor added a second point with their 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. A default at No. 3 double sent the Oles into singles with a 3-0 lead.

Jenna Rubbelke gave Hamline its lone point of the match by rallying to win in a super tiebreaker at No. 4 singles in the first completed singles match of the evening, but St. Olaf lost just three games in eight sets on its way to winning the other four contested singles matches.

Zubarieva cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles for her second win of the season and classmates Sarah Clark and Fiona O'Flaherty also lost just one game in their wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Fellow first year Jane Spading did not drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles.

St. Olaf visits Duluth to take on conference newcomer St. Scholastica on Saturday, March 5. The match will begin at 12:30 p.m. at Duluth Indoor Sports Center.
