ST. PAUL, Minn. – First year
Parker Casey scored at 3:22 of the extra session to give the St. Olaf College men's hockey team a 2-1 overtime victory over Hamline University in the teams' series opener on Friday night at TRIA Rink.
After a scoreless first 53-plus minutes of play, St. Olaf (7-12-3, 4-6-1 MIAC) broke through on a goal by first year
Sean Walsh at 13:58 of the third period, but Hamline (3-13-1, 1-8-0 MIAC) responded just over three minutes later on the power play to eventually send the game to overtime. In the 3-on-3 period, Casey netted his third goal of the season off an assist from classmate
Jonathan Young to give the Oles three points in the standings.
Walsh broke the scoreless deadlock at 13:58 of the third period by scoring on the backhand after getting in behind the Pipers' defense on a pass from classmate
Ethan Hersant. Walsh's goal was his eighth of the season, which ranks second on the team, while Hersant collected his team-leading 10th assist of the season. Junior
Evan Shoemaker also picked up an assist on the goal.
Just 84 seconds after the goal, the Oles were whistled for their lone penalty of the game and the Pipers converted on the man advantage on a goal by Brendan Sheehan with 2:59 left in regulation. Neither team mustered a shot on goal in the remaining time as the game went to overtime even at a goal apiece.
Shoemaker hit the pipe inside the first minute of the 3-on-3 overtime before sophomore
Lukas Haugen made his 25th and final save of the game to thwart Andrew Erwin. Hamline goaltender Kevin Lake made three saves to prolong the game for the hosts before Casey won it at the 3:22 mark.
Young set up Casey's winner, forcing a turnover on the forecheck to create a quick transition before finding Casey in front of the net for the game-winning tally. Casey was also 11-for-15 on face-offs in the game.
Haugen earned his fourth victory of the season for St. Olaf with the 25-save night, while Lake suffered the loss for Hamline with 23 saves in the game. Both teams committed just one minor penalty in the game.
The Oles and Pipers conclude their series on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 5 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
