Yagodinski scores a dozen off the bench, Oles fall at MIAC-leading Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team got 12 points off the bench from first year Paige Yagodinski in a 58-42 loss to conference-leading Augsburg University on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Yagodinski was 5-for-7 from the field, including 2-for-4 from behind the arc, in the fourth double-digit-point performance of her collegiate career for St. Olaf (7-13, 6-11 MIAC). Augsburg (15-4, 15-1 MIAC) had three scorers in double figures, led by Selena Lor's 14-point afternoon to maintain its two-game lead atop the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) standings.

In addition to Yagodinski's 12-point afternoon, junior Rachel Kelly had 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks for the Oles, who shot just 32.7 percent (16-for-49) from the field in the game and committed 23 turnovers that led to 32 Augsburg points.

Lor was 5-for-8 from the field, including 3-for-6 from three-point range, for the Auggies, who got 13 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, and seven steals from Jen Masello and 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench from leading scorer Anja Smith.

St. Olaf raced out to a 7-0 lead over the first 1:41 of the game on a three-pointer by senior K'Lynn Lewis, a jumper by Kelly, and a pair of free throws by first year Sarah Tangen. A layup by first year Sophia Kormann gave the Oles a 9-2 lead three minutes in before Augsburg scored the final 16 points of the quarter to take an 18-9 lead after 10 minutes.

Kelly broke a scoreless drought of 8:26 with a layup early in the second quarter, but the Auggies reclaimed a double-digit-point lead by scoring the next two baskets. Trailing 22-11, the Oles went on a 10-2 run that included six points from Yagodinski to make it a 24-21 game inside the final two minutes of the half before going into the locker room down 27-21.

Augsburg extended its lead back to double figures with a 5-1 start over the first three-plus minutes of the third quarter. St. Olaf hung around, however, scoring on three-straight possessions late in the quarter – including a three-pointer by Yagodinski – to go to the fourth down 41-33.

The Auggies started the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run to balloon their lead to 16 with 3:49 remaining before Yagodinski's second three-pointer of the game ended a stretch of over four minutes without a point for the Oles. Kelly hit her 10th three-pointer on the final possession of the game for St. Olaf to get into double figures for the 13th time in 15 games this season.

The Oles have a quick turnaround before hosting Saint Mary's on Monday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.
