Men's tennis splits two matches in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team split a pair of matches against first-time opponents on Sunday at Hilton Head Island Tennis Resort, bouncing back from a 9-0 loss to DePauw University with an 8-1 win over Randolph College.

In the morning, DePauw (8-5) won all three doubles matches by at least five games and claimed all six singles matches in straight sets. St. Olaf (2-4) came back in the afternoon by winning both contested doubles matches and four of the five contested singles matches in straight sets against shorthanded Randolph (5-6).

The Oles return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Tuesday, April 5 at home against Macalester College at 4:30 p.m. at Carlson Courts.

DePauw started the match by winning the three doubles matches in comfortable fashion, winning 8-3 at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. The Tigers also won all six of the singles matches in straight sets to pick up the 9-0 win.

The tightest score line in singles came in the No. 5 singles match, where sophomore Jakub Belik dropped both sets by a single break of serve, falling 6-4, 6-4. DePauw lost just nine games in the other 10 singles sets.

Later in the day, St. Olaf picked up its second win of the season by recording an 8-1 win over the WildCats. Senior Tim Roback and junior Henry Smith both picked up wins in both singles and doubles for the Oles.

In doubles, Smith and sophomore Max Loesch earned the third win in their last four matches with an 8-2 victory at the second spot. Bruha and Roback followed with an 8-3 win at the top spot for their first win as a tandem this season.

In singles, the Oles logged four straight-set singles wins and a default at No. 6 singles, while Randolph got a super-tiebreaker win from Alex Kulvivat at No. 2 singles to grab its lone point of the match.

Smith claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles, Klagge was victorious 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, Roback dropped just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, and Belik also lost just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 5 singles. Belik's win was his team-leading third of the season.
