Women's tennis falls to regular-season champion Gustavus

OWATONNA, Minn. – In its final match of the regular season, the St. Olaf College women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 loss to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regular-season champion Gustavus Adolphus College on Friday evening at West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center.

Gustavus (17-6, 9-0 MIAC) completed an undefeated run through conference play to claim its 30th MIAC regular-season title with the 9-0 victory over St. Olaf (8-5, 6-4 MIAC). Both teams entered the match having already secured a spot in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs and were ranked in two sets of regional rankings.

The Gusties entered the match ranked No. 3 in Region VII in the NCAA Regional Rankings and No. 8 in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), while the Oles were No. 10 in the NCAA rankings and No. 20 in the ITA rankings.

St. Olaf will be either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed in the MIAC Playoffs, which begin with the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The Oles will be the No. 5 seed unless Bethel loses its final two regular-season matches to St. Scholastica and Carleton this weekend.

Gustavus swept the three doubles matches, winning all three by at least four games to grab control of the match. The Gusties went on to win all six singles matches in straight sets, with the closest match coming in a 6-3, 6-2 score line at No. 6 singles.

Regardless of the result of Bethel's last two matches, the Oles are locked into playing the Royals in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 3. One win by the Royals in their final two matches means St. Olaf will head to Arden Hills for the quarterfinal match.
