Buzakovic nets first-career goal, No. 15 Oles edged by No. 4 Maroons

CHICAGO, Ill. – In its second-straight game against a top-10 opponent, the No. 15-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team was edged 2-1 by the No. 4-ranked University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon at a rain-soaked Stagg Field.

After St. Olaf (2-3-0) and UChicago (5-0-0) exchanged first-half goals, Lyndon Hu netted the game-winner in the 55th minute for the Maroons, who improved to 46-6-3 on their home turf since the start of the 2016 season. First year Robi Buzakovic netted his first collegiate goal for the Oles in the loss.

UChicago got out to an early lead in the eighth minute when Hu slotted in Alex Lee up the channel on the left and Lee fired the ball inside the far post for his second goal of the season. Lee nearly set up a second goal for the Maroons 11 minutes later, but junior Austin Williams rushed off his line to thwart Kai Walsh's attempt to get around the goalkeeper after Lee played Walsh in behind the Ole back line.

St. Olaf responded in the 26th minute thanks to Buzakovic's first-career goal, as the first year slotted the ball into the lower-right corner of the net on a one-timer off a feed from junior Victor Gaulmin. The goal came after junior Shea Bechtel found classmate Jordan Oberholzter, who entered the game less than a minute earlier, with a cross-field ball and Oberholtzer headed the ball back to Gaulmin.

Buzakovic's goal made the Oles just the second team this season to score against UChicago, which has allowed just three goals through their five games. St. Olaf nearly took the lead seven minutes later, but junior Hakeem Morgan's free kick from the top-right corner of the box hit the crossbar and then went out of play by hitting the football crossbar.

Five minutes later, the Oles had another chance to go ahead, but Will Boyes made a save to deny Bechtel and a UChicago defender cleared first year Aidan Hillis' goal-bound header away on the ensuing corner kick.

Hu scored the lone goal of the second half for the Maroons, scoring on a shot from 30-yard that skidded off the wet turf and into the lower-left corner following a turnover. UChicago had seven of the game's nine shots on goal, although St. Olaf held an 11-10 edge in shots and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Oles earned back-to-back corner kicks with 10 minutes to go and had an opportunity to tie the game on the second attempt, but junior Casey McCloskey's header bounced over the goal. St. Olaf finished the game down a man after a red card in the 85th minute.

Williams made a season-high five saves in the loss for St. Olaf, while Boyes picked up the victory for UChicago with one save in the game.

St. Olaf returns home to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play against Bethel University on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field.
