Women's soccer plays to scoreless tie at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie on the road against Hamline University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Pat Paterson Field.

In its first conference road game of the season, St. Olaf (2-3-1, 1-0-1 MIAC) outshot Hamline (1-2-3, 0-1-1 MIAC) by margins of 13-9 overall and 5-3 in shots on goal, but neither team was able to find a breakthrough. The Oles posted their second shutout of the season and have held their opponents to one or no goals in five of their six games under first-year head coach Becky Maines.

Senior Grace Sprangers recorded her second shutout of the season by making three saves over the 90 minutes, as the two teams settled for a point apiece. Prior to this season, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved change to the overtime rules in collegiate soccer that eliminated overtime from regular-season contests.

St. Olaf held a 7-3 advantage in shots in the opening half and came close to breaking the deadlock in the 27th minute when sophomore Sadie Klassen had a goal-bound shot blocked by a Hamline defender. Five minutes later, the sophomore headed a cross from first year Clara Kubis just wide of the post from the middle of the box. Klassen had a game-high six shots and a game-best three shots on goal.

The closest the Oles came to a breakthrough in the second half was a 78th-minute effort from senior Rachel Tanner from the right side of the box that grazed the crossbar.

St. Olaf returns to its home turf at Rolf Mellby Field to host Coe College in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m.
