ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team saw its three-game unbeaten run come to an end with a 2-1 loss to Macalester College on Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium.
Macalester (5-2-2, 2-1-0 MIAC) led 2-0 after scoring in the opening two minutes of the second half, but St. Olaf (3-4-1, 1-1-1 MIAC) got within a goal with 20 minutes to go on a goal by senior
Tessa Anderson. The Scots, however, hung on the rest of the way to improve to 4-1-1 at home this season.
In the 25th minute, Macalester got on the board first thanks to a long-range shot by Sarah Hamilton for what proved to be the lone goal of the opening 45 minutes. Out of the halftime break, the Scots quickly doubled their lead, as Lucy Grochulska pounced on a rebound to finish from close range to make it a 2-0 game.
St. Olaf climbed back within a goal in the 70th minute when Anderson scored in a 1-on-1 with the Macalester goalkeeper after being set up by sophomore
Sadie Klassen and first year
Cat Duffy-Shaw. The goal was Anderson's second in as many games, while Klassen and Duffy-Shaw also collected at least one point for the second game in a row.
The Oles earned a string of three-straight corner kicks in the final 90 seconds but were unable to find a tying goal in the closing stages. St. Olaf held an 11-9 edge in shots in the game, although Macalester led by a 7-5 margin in shots on goal.
Senior
Grace Sprangers suffered the loss with four saves over the first 51:12, while junior
Maddie Black had one save over the final 38:48.
The Oles are back in action at home on Tuesday, Sept. 27 when the College of St. Scholastica visits Rolf Mellby Field for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
