NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore
Sadie Klassen scored a second-half hat trick in the span of just over four minutes to lead the St. Olaf College women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over the College of St. Scholastica in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Tuesday afternoon.
St. Olaf (4-4-1, 2-1-1 MIAC) led 1-0 at halftime thanks to a goal from senior
Tessa Anderson but broke the game wide open when Klassen scored three times in the span of 4:04 midway through the second half. St. Scholastica (1-7-1, 0-3-1 MIAC) got one goal back in the 85th minute through Tenley Voth, scoring with its lone shot of the game.
The win snapped the Saints' two-game unbeaten run in the series (1-0-1) and improved the Oles to 11-1-1 in the head-to-head matchups between the two programs.
After setting up a Klassen for a shot that was blocked on the line by a St. Scholastica defender three minutes earlier, Anderson – the reigning MIAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week – opened the scoring for St. Olaf in the 25th minute. Sophomore
Katie Korbas played Anderson in with a through ball and Anderson slotted the ball into the lower-left corner of the goal to score for the third-straight game. The assist the first collegiate point for Korbas.
The Oles had a chance to double their lead inside the final three minutes of the half, but first year
Megan Timmerman's right-footed shot from the back post went just wide of the right post following a cross from junior
Bella Woog. St. Olaf led 1-0 at the break after outshooting St. Scholastica by a 12-0 margin.
Klassen got her first goal on the afternoon in the 64th minute, picking out the lower-right corner from near the top of the box after Anderson intercepted a goal kick by the Saints and got the ball to Klassen. Just 2:05 later, Klassen bent a left-footed shot into the top-left corner from inside the box after being found by Timmerman, who earned her first-career point with the assist.
Klassen completed her hat trick just 1:59 after her second goal by heading a left-wing free kick from Woog into an empty net from close range. Klassen had eight shots and six shots on goal in the win.
Voth got a consolation goal for the Saints with a little over five minutes to play, firing the ball into the top-right corner off a pass from Elle Petersen. Junior
Maddie Black earned her first-career victory in goal for St. Olaf, which held advantages of 24-1 in shots, 12-1 in shots on goal, and 10-0 in corner kicks in the win.
The Oles head across town to take on Carleton College on Saturday, Oct. 1 for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Bell Field.
