Men's hockey falls in third to Concordia-Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Concordia-Moorhead scored three times over the final seven-plus minutes to break a 2-2 tie and finish off a sweep of the St. Olaf College men's hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Moorhead Sports Center.

Concordia (10-9-1, 7-4-0 MIAC) grabbed an early 2-0 lead with two goals in the first six minutes before St. Olaf (11-10-1, 5-8-0 MIAC) netted two goals in the final three-plus minutes of the opening period to tie the game at 2-2 after one. The score remained 2-2 until the Cobbers broke the deadlock at 12:23 of the third period and the hosts went on to seal the sweep with a pair of late empty-net goals.

A power-play goal from Kevin Ness less than three minutes into the game followed by a goal from brother Nicholas Ness three minutes later gave Concordia-Moorhead a quick 2-0 lead. The Oles responded to tie the game with goals from sophomores Sean Walsh and Tyler Cooper in the final 3:49 of the period to knot the score at 2-2 after one.

Walsh got St. Olaf on the board with his seventh goal of the season – his third in the last five games – by tipping in a shot at 16:11 by sophomore Connor Kalthoff, who was set up by first year Pavel Karasek. Just over two minutes later, Cooper tallied his team-leading 11th goal of the season by firing the puck in from the top of the left circle on the power play with 1:30 to go in the period.

Neither team was able to score in the middle period, as Cooper came the closest by ringing a shot from the left circle off the pipe inside the final two minutes of the period. The score stayed at 2-2 all the way until the 12:23 mark of the third period when Concordia-Moorhead's Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe scored the eventual game-winner unassisted. The Cobbers added two empty-netters in the final 1:11 to create the three-goal margin.

Junior Lukas Haugen made 19 saves in goal for St. Olaf, while Matt Fitzgerald had 16 stops.

The Oles are off next weekend before taking on Saint John's University on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11.
