NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The No. 23-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team got goals from six different student-athletes in a 6-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory over Saint Mary's University on Wednesday at Rolf Mellby Field.
Sophomore
Ben Beckman and senior
Clemente Arcuch Puig netted first-half goals for St. Olaf (9-3-1, 5-0-1 MIAC) before junior
Shea Bechtel, first year
Ryan Bechtel, junior
Joe Deuitch, and first year
Alex Yu tallied goals in the second half. The win was the 17th in a row in the series with Saint Mary's (6-4-3, 2-3-1 MIAC) for the Oles going back to 2005 and the 6-0 margin was tied for the largest differential during that streak.
Senior
Victor Gaulmin recorded a career-high three assists, while senior
Liam Vance, first year
Karsten Segall, and first year
Ben Brody also set up goals in the win, which came a day after St. Olaf returned to United Soccer Coaches Top 25 for the first time since the preseason. The victory also kept the Oles atop the MIAC standings, one point ahead of Carleton College, which edged Macalester College by a 2-1 margin across town.
Gaulmin's three-assist performance saw him move into a tie for sixth in program history with 19 assists for his career and jump up a spot to eighth with 71 points.
Shea Bechtel's goal moved him up into a tie for seventh on the program's all-time list with 27 and into fifth with 81 points.
Beckman opened the scoring for St. Olaf in the 24th minute with his first collegiate goal, as the sophomore was on hand to turn the ball home after a Saint Mary's player tried to clear Gaulmin's cross from the left but only was able to flick the ball to Beckman at the back post. Ten minutes later, Arcuch Puig doubled the Oles' lead by winning the ball of a Cardinals' player at the top of the box before firing a left-footed shot inside the left post for his third goal of the season.
St. Olaf tacked on four goals in the second half, beginning with goals from both Bechtel brothers. Just over three minutes into the second half,
Shea Bechtel got a fortuitous goal when Gaulmin's shot from the top of the box following a cutback from Vance deflected off Bechtel on its way towards the goal.
Gaulmin picked up his third assist of the game in the 67th minute by setting up
Ryan Bechtel's second collegiate goal. Gaulmin threaded a ball in behind the Saint Mary's defense up the left channel for Bechtel, who ran onto it and finished with his left foot while getting taken down by Cardinals' goalkeeper Daniel Sessler, who got a yellow card on the play.
Deuitch and Yu added the first goals of their respective careers in the final 15 minutes to close out the scoring. Deuitch slotted the ball into the lower-left corner of the goal in the 76th minute after Segall's cutback was not cleared and, 10 minutes later, Yu scored on a deflected effort in the box after Brody laid the ball back for his classmate following a corner kick.
Junior
Peter Forseth collected his fifth shutout of the season – his fourth in the last six games – by stopping all three shots on goal Saint Mary's generated. The shutout was the 10th of Forseth's career, pulling him level with Alex Kuehl '11 and senior
Austin Williams for seventh in program history.
St. Olaf seeks to extend its nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1) when it visits Augsburg University on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 5:30 p.m.
