No. 17 men's soccer storms back in second half to top Johnnies

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The No. 17-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team scored four second-half goals to overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit and extend its unbeaten streak to 12 games with a 4-2 road victory over Saint John's University on Saturday afternoon at Haws Field.

Saint John's (7-5-4, 4-3-2 MIAC) scored twice in the opening 30 minutes to take a 2-0 lead into the halftime break, but St. Olaf (12-3-1, 7-0-1 MIAC) scored three times in a span of less than five minutes early in the second half and added an insurance goal inside the final 15 minutes. The victory was the Oles' fourth in the last five meetings with the Johnnies in Collegeville and locked up a top-two seed and a bye into the semifinals of the MIAC Playoffs for head coach Justin Oliver's team.

St. Olaf's 12-game unbeaten streak (11-0-1) is the fourth-longest stretch in program history and its second-longest since 1999, trailing only a 16-game run (15-0-1) in 2021.

Senior Victor Gaulmin continued to produce offensively with a goal and an assist for St. Olaf, giving him five goals and six assists in the last five games. Sophomore Robi Buzakovic and junior Ian Holtz-Hazeltine netted their first goals of the season as well in a game that saw both teams benefit from an own goal.

Saint John's got on the board first on an own goal by St. Olaf in the 14th minute and went on to double its lead in the 30th minute through Riley Buxell's third goal of the season. The Oles generated 10 shots and nine corner kicks in the opening half but continued to trail 2-0 at the half.

Buzakovic started the flurry of goals for St. Olaf early in the second half in the 55th minute, collecting a pass from Gaulmin before curling the ball into the lower-right corner of the net from near the left corner of the box to get the Oles on the board. Just 62 seconds later, Gaulmin tied the game with his team-leading 10th goal of the season, bending the ball into the same lower-right corner from outside the box off a pass from first year Ryan Bechtel.

A little over three minutes after Gaulmin's equalizer, St. Olaf went ahead when a Saint John's defender turned the ball into his own net following a driven cross from near the left end line by senior Casey McCloskey. McCloskey also set up the Oles' fourth goal in the 77th minute, firing the ball across goal to Holtz-Hazeltine, who tapped the ball in for his first collegiate goal.

St. Olaf outshot Saint John's by counts of 21-15 overall and 12-5 in shots on goal. Junior Peter Forseth collected his 11th win of the season with a three-save afternoon, while Evan Siefken had eight saves in a losing effort for the Johnnies.

Entering the final week of the regular season, the Oles remain level on points with Carleton College atop the MIAC standings, although the Knights have just one game remaining to St. Olaf's two. The Oles close out their regular-season home slate by hosting Gustavus Adolphus College on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 3:30 p.m.
