ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team was blanked 1-0 by the College of Saint Benedict in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action on Saturday afternoon at CSB Soccer Field.
Saint Ben's (9-5-2, 6-3-1 MIAC) got an early goal from Abby Willenbring that stood as the game-winner, as the Bennies halted a four-game unbeaten streak for St. Olaf (6-5-4, 4-3-3 MIAC) with the shutout victory. The Oles were 3-0-1 in their previous four games before the narrow loss.
St. Olaf outshot Saint Ben's by a 19-12 margin, including a 7-6 edge in shots on goal, over the 90 minutes but was unable to get anything past Annie Waters in the CSB goal. Waters made five saves to collect the shutout win, while senior
Maddie Black had five saves in the loss.
Willenbring scored the lone goal of the game on a deflected effort just under six minutes in for her team-leading sixth goal of the season. The senior has scored in each of the last six games for the Bennies and all six of her goals have come during that stretch. The Oles took 13 of their 19 shots in the game in the second half but could not find a tying goal.
The loss left St. Olaf level with Augsburg University for the last two spots in the MIAC Playoffs with 15 points apiece entering the final week of the regular season. The Oles conclude their regular-season schedule and hope to lock up a playoff spot when they travel to Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 3:30 p.m.
