Green Knights hold off men's hockey in season opener

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team overcame a 3-1 deficit to tie the game but went on to drop its season opener by a 4-3 margin to visiting St. Norbert College on Friday night at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

St. Norbert (1-0-0) scored twice in the opening seven minutes and held a 3-1 lead less than two minutes into the second period before St. Olaf (0-1-0) rallied to tie the game on goals by junior Jonathan Young and senior Brendan Darby. However, less than 90 seconds after Darby's tying goal, the Green Knights got the eventual game-winner from Logan Dombrowsky and shut down the Oles over the final 30 minutes to claim the first regular-season meeting between the two programs since 2013.

Young had a goal and an assist in the loss for St. Olaf, which also got a pair of assists from senior Troy Bowditch. Seven Oles had at least one point on the night. Calvin Hanson led St. Norbert, which sat just outside the top 15 in the USCHO Division III Men's Preseason Poll, to the win with a three-point night on a goal and two assists, while T.J. Koufis added a goal and an assist.

The Green Knights got goals from Will Stromp and Koufis just 1:16 apart inside the first seven minutes to get out to an early 2-0 lead before senior Parker Casey got the Oles on the board late in the period to make it a 2-1 game after 20 minutes. With St. Olaf on a 5-on-3 power play, sophomore Jonathan Panisa got the puck down low to junior Sean Walsh, who backhanded the puck in front to Casey to slot home for the seventh goal of his career.

Hanson stretched St. Norbert's lead to 3-1 just 100 seconds into the third period before St. Olaf rallied with two goals in the span of less than four minutes. Young started the comeback by putting home a rebound off a shot by junior Ben Luscko after a faceoff win by Bowditch at the 4:43 mark. A little more than three-and-a-half minutes later, an errant shot by Bowditch found Young behind the net and Young go the puck in front to Darby for his ninth-career goal at 8:24.

The Green Knights responded just 1:18 after Darby's tying goal, as Dombrowsky tallied the eventual game-winner at 9:42. St. Olaf managed just eight shots on goal over the final two periods, including just two on the third, as St. Norbert held onto the one-goal advantage.

The St. Olaf penalty kill held St. Norbert to an 0-for-6 mark on the power play in the game, while the Oles scored on one of their two chances on the power play. Sophomore Tyler Laureault made 28 saves in the loss for St. Olaf, while Johnny Roberts claimed the victory with an 18-save night for St. Norbert.

The Oles conclude their opening weekend by hosting Marian University on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 5 p.m.
