No. 11 men's soccer claims outright MIAC regular-season title in Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The No. 11-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team claimed the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regular-season title outright with a 4-0 victory over Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.

Entering the day knowing a win would secure the title outright, St. Olaf (13-3-2, 8-0-2 MIAC) took care of business against Concordia (4-11-2, 1-7-2 MIAC) behind a first-half goal from senior Victor Gaulmin and a three-goal second half. The victory earned the Oles their second MIAC regular-season title in the last three seasons and the eighth in program history, with five of the eight coming outright.

With an 8-0-2 run through the MIAC schedule this season, St. Olaf posted an undefeated record in conference play for the second time in three seasons after never having done so previously. The victory also earned the Oles the top seed in next week's MIAC Playoffs, as St. Olaf finished one point ahead of crosstown-rival Carleton College for the top seed.

After a scoreless opening half hour, Gaulmin broke the deadlock in the 31st minute for the Oles with his sixth goal in the last seven games. First year Ryan Bechtel launched a long throw-in into the box from the left and the ball made it to senior Liam Vance at the back post. Vance steered the ball back across to Gaulmin to fire into the roof of the net from close range for Gaulmin's team-leading 11th goal of the season.

After settling for a 1-0 lead despite outshooting the Cobbers by a 15-2 margin in the opening half, St. Olaf pulled away in the second half by scoring twice in the span of less than three minutes and adding a late fourth goal. Gaulmin added an assist on the Oles' second goal, as sophomore Caspar Olseth rose to head in Gaulmin's 65th-minute corner kick for his first goal of the season. The game marked Gaulmin's fourth game this season with a goal and an assist.

Just under three minutes later, St. Olaf added a third goal on an own goal by Concordia, as a Cobber defender turned in a ball across goal from senior Casey McCloskey on the left to make it 3-0. Sophomore Dimitri Nair scored his second goal of the season in the late stages, slotting the ball home after combining with first year Abdirasak Bulale, who earned his first collegiate assist on the 86th-minute goal.

Junior Peter Forseth had just two saves to make in collecting his seventh shutout and 12th victory of the season. Jensen Waltz made seven saves in the loss for the Cobbers, as St. Olaf outshot the hosts by a 24-4 count overall and a 13-2 count in shots on goal.

The Oles will host a yet-to-be-determined opponent in the semifinals of the MIAC Playoffs on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field. St. Olaf's opponent will be the lowest remaining seed following Monday's quarterfinals between sixth-seeded Saint John's University and third-seeded Gustavus Adolphus College and fifth-seeded Augsburg University and fourth-seeded Macalester College.
