No. 23 women's cross country takes second at MIAC Championships

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The No. 23-ranked St. Olaf College women's cross country team recorded its second-straight runner-up finish at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Championships behind five All-MIAC performances on Saturday at Carleton College's Bill Huyck Championship Course.

St. Olaf got All-MIAC finishes from sophomore Lauren Walda, senior Katie Gebert, senior Bella Call, senior Julia Everest, and sophomore Grace Moeller to compile 51 points in the team standings. Fourth-ranked Carleton had six of the top-10 finishers to claim its second consecutive team title with 25 points.

Call and Everest both logged their third-straight All-MIAC performances, Walda and Gebert added their second, and Moeller earned her first with their top-15 showings. The Oles easily outdistanced the third-place College of Saint Benedict by 36 points for their 13th top-three finish in a row at the conference meet.

Walda moved up five spots from her 10th-place finish as a first year, leading the way for St. Olaf with a fifth-place result (21:54.5), and was joined in the top 10 by Gebert in eighth (22:11.5), who improved on last season's 11th-place performance. Call and Everest were separated by two seconds in 11th and 12th, respectively, to claim their third All-MIAC accolades out of a possible three (2020 canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic). Call and Everest are the 10th and 11th three-time All-MIAC honorees in program history for St. Olaf.

After finishing in the first honorable mention spot last season, Moeller grabbed the final All-MIAC accolade by crossing the line in 15th (22:50.2) to round out the five scorers for the Oles. Junior Sophie Abernethy, sophomore Ella Landis, and junior Alison Bode finished 18th, 19th, and 22nd, respectively, to secure Honorable Mention All-MIAC laurels.

St. Olaf shifts its attention to the NCAA Division III North Region Championships, which will be contested on Saturday, Nov. 11 at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wis. Before then, the Oles who will not be running at regionals will compete in the Cannon River Closer on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. at St. Olaf's home course.
