ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Junior
Ziling Zhen scored a career-high 12 points off the bench for the St. Olaf College women's basketball team in a 60-51 loss to the University of Minnesota Morris on the final day of the CSB Tip-Off on Saturday at Claire Lynch Hall.
Zhen was 4-for-8 from the field, including 2-for-2 from behind the arc, on the way to blowing past her previous career-high total of seven points and added a career-best seven rebounds for St. Olaf (0-2). Maddy Grove came off the bench to provide a game-high 23 points to lead Minnesota Morris (1-2) to the victory.
After the game, Zhen was selected to the five-member All-Tournament Team, along with MVP Sophia Jonas of the College of Saint Benedict, Grove, and Lexi Hagen of the University of Northwestern. Zhen's previous career high in scoring was seven points against St. Catherine University on Dec. 10, 2022.
St. Olaf shot just 3-for-15 (20.0 percent) from the field in the opening quarter to fall in a 17-8 hole but limited Minnesota Morris to just two field goals in the second quarter. The Oles outscored the Cougars by an 18-7 tally in the second to grab a 26-24 halftime lead. Trailing 19-9, St. Olaf went on a 17-2 run to take its largest lead of the game at 26-21 with 2:58 to go in the half before Minnesota Morris scored the final three points of the half.
The Cougars took a 39-32 lead into the fourth quarter after outscoring the Oles by a 15-8 count in the third, thanks largely to going 7-for-10 at the free-throw line. In the fourth, St. Olaf tied the game at 46-46 with 3:42 to go on a three-point play by junior
Sophia Kormann, but Grove scored the final five points in a 7-0 run that gave the Cougars the lead for good. Grove had 13 of her 23 points in the fourth.
St. Olaf concludes non-conference play by hosting Crown College in its season opener on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m.
