Sherman's highlight-reel goal in OT gives men's hockey win at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Junior Cody Sherman scored a highlight-reel goal 1:24 into overtime to give the St. Olaf College men's hockey team a 3-2 victory in its series opener with Hamline University on Friday night at TRIA Rink.

After Hamline (3-4-0, 1-2-0 MIAC) rallied to tie the game with two third-period goals, Sherman was the hero in the 3-on-3 extra session for St. Olaf (3-3-1, 1-1-1 MIAC), getting the Oles the extra point with the overtime win. Five of St. Olaf's seven games this season have been decided by one goal or ended in a tie.

Early in the overtime period, Sherman took a drop pass from senior Noah Heisler in his own defensive zone, stick-handled past a Hamline skater inside the offensive zone, deked from his from his backhand to his forehand, and scored just the second goal of his collegiate career at the 1:24 mark. The junior was playing in just his 11th game as an Ole after suffering back-to-back season-ending injuries in his first two seasons.

Junior Jonathan Young gave the Oles a 1-0 lead at the first intermission by tallying the lone goal of the opening 20 minutes on the power play at the 7:26 mark. Heisler and junior Ben Luscko set up the goal, as Heisler got the puck across to Luscko, who dropped it down to Young in front of the net for Young's team-leading third goal of the season.

St. Olaf took a 2-0 lead into the third period after junior Tyler Cooper netted the lone goal of the middle period off assists from first years Camden Benson and Tony Leahy. Cooper was on-hand to turn home a bouncing puck in front after a shot by Benson from the right side, which came after Leahy's shot from the left was blocked into Benson's path. The goal was the 29th of Cooper's career, moving him into sole possession of 10th place in recorded program history.

The Pipers rallied in the third period to force the game to overtime and take one point from the night. Carson Simon halved Hamline's deficit with a power-play goal at 2:04 of the third before Ryan Brandt tied it with 1:53 to go in regulation, setting up Sherman's overtime heroics.

Senior Lukas Haugen improved to 3-1-1 on the season by stopping 29 of the 31 shots he faced for the Oles, while Maximillian Haselbacher made 31 saves in the loss for the Pipers. Game two of the series is set for a 5 p.m. puck drop at St. Olaf Ice Arena on Saturday, Nov. 18.
