ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team dropped the finale of its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series with Hamline University by a score of 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at TRIA Rink.
St. Olaf (4-4-0, 0-4-0 MIAC) got on the board first on a shorthanded goal by sophomore
Solvei Berg-Messerole, but Hamline (5-2-0, 3-1-0 MIAC) scored the game's final four goals over the last 23-plus minutes. The Pipers were receiving votes in the USCHO Division III Women's Poll released earlier this week.
In the opening period, the Oles were unable to capitalized on a five-minute power play after a boarding call, as the teams went into the first intermission scoreless. St. Olaf outshot Hamline by a 12-4 margin in shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes thanks, largely, to the extended power play.
Berg-Messerole broke the deadlock at 8:37 of the second period with the first shorthanded goal of her collegiate career. With the Oles on the penalty kill, sophomore
Molly Terebayza deflected a pass from a Hamline skater near center ice. Berg-Messerole collected the puck on the left, skated past a Piper, and fired the puck home for her fifth goal of the season.
Hamline tied the game at 1-1 late in the second period on a goal by Annika Lindgren at the 17:22 mark and went on to tally three third-period goals to complete the sweep. The Pipers held a 27-19 advantage in shots on goal in the game and got an 18-save afternoon from Arika Penney in goal. Sophomore
Carley Tuman had 23 saves – 12 of which came in the second period – for the Oles in the loss.
St. Olaf this the road to face UW-River Falls, which is currently ranked fourth in the country, in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.
