NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In the second-straight nail-biter between the two teams, the St. Olaf College men's hockey team played to a 1-1 tie against Bethel University, but the Royals came away with the extra point in the shootout on Saturday at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
Coming off a 2-1 overtime victory the night before, Bethel (3-0-1, 1-0-1 MIAC) got a goal midway through the second period before junior
Cody Sherman tallied his first collegiate goal for St. Olaf (1-2-1, 0-1-1 MIAC) to force the game to overtime. After a scoreless five minutes of three-on-three overtime, Jack Brown scored the lone goal of the shootout in the fourth round to give the Royals four of the six points from the weekend series.
After a scoreless first period, the Oles thought they got on the board first inside the first 90 seconds of the second period. Seconds after St. Olaf killed off a Bethel power play, junior
Sean Walsh flew in behind the Royals' defense and was taken down on a trip while taking a shot that Walsh thought went in and out of the goal. The penalty was assessed but no goal was given on the play.
The Royals proceeded to open the scoring through Luke Posner at 9:41 of the second period and held that lead until Sherman's goal at the 14:02 mark of the third period. After first year
Bjorn Lervick sent the puck into the offensive zone, sophomore
Jonathan Panisa knocked the puck to Sherman, who scored on the backhand to tie the game at 1-1. Lervick's assist was his first collegiate point.
The Oles had five of the game's six shots on goal following Sherman's goal, but Travis Allen saved all five for Bethel. Allen made two saves and senior
Lukas Haugen had one in the 3-on-3 overtime. The goaltenders proceeded to prevent goals on the first six attempts in the shootout before Brown snuck one past Haugen in the first sudden-death round. Allen denied junior
Jonathan Young on the final attempt to clinch the second point for the Royals.
Allen finished the game with 29 saves for Bethel, while Haugen had 20 for St. Olaf. After combining for just two penalties the night before, the two teams were assessed nine penalties in the game, but Bethel was 0-for-5 on the power play and St. Olaf was 0-for-4.
The Oles travel to face a pair of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foes next weekend, beginning with a game at UW-River Falls on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.
