Volleyball sweeps Saint Ben's to secure home playoff match

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team celebrated Senior Night by locking up a home match in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 sweep of the College of Saint Benedict on Friday night at Skoglund Center.

Knowing a victory would earn itself a home match in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Playoffs, St. Olaf (18-8, 7-4 MIAC) picked up its ninth win in its last 10 matches by sweeping Saint Ben's (17-8, 9-2 MIAC), which received votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national poll. The Oles have won four of the last five meetings with the Bennies after Saint Ben's won 10 in a row from 2011-18.

Prior to the match, St. Olaf honored its five-member senior class of Anysia Caille, Erica Collin, Catherine Moore, Selena Rodriguez, and Christina Cheng, along with their families, for their dedication to the program over the last four or five seasons. The Oles have appeared in the MIAC Playoffs in each year of their careers.

Rodriguez recorded her 11th 20-dig performance of the season for St. Olaf by tallying a match-high 23 to go with five assists and two aces. Moore and Caille both reached double figures in kills, as Moore had a match-high 13 and Caille added 11. First year Maren Miller registered nine kills on 14 errorless swings to hit .643, while first year Lilah Van Scoyoc also did not commit an error with eight kills on 23 attempts.

Sophomore Paige Christophersen tallied 23 assists, eight digs and four aces, while first year Skylar Fildew contributed 15 assists and five digs. The Oles had nine aces and just two service errors on the night.

Saint Ben's outhit St. Olaf by a .179-.167 margin in an opening set that included 13 ties and six lead chances, but the Oles finished the set strong to grab the lead. The Bennies rallied from an 18-13 deficit to take a 20-19 lead but won just two points the rest of the set, as St. Olaf finished the set on a 6-2 run. Caille broke a 22-22 tie with a kill before Christophersen closed the set with an ace and a dump to give the Oles the opener.

Both teams got their offenses going in the second set, with St. Olaf hitting .359 and Saint Ben's connecting at a .261 clip. Moore, Caille, and Miller combined for 14 of the Oles' 18 kills in the set to give the hosts a two-sets-to-none lead. The Bennies held an 18-14 lead before St. Olaf won eight-straight points to take the lead for good.

Moore was one of four Oles with at least three kills in the third set, as St. Olaf finished off its third MIAC sweep of the season. Saint Ben's used a 4-1 surge to take an 18-16 advantage before St. Olaf won nine of the final 10 points of the set. Christophersen had aces on three of the final four points of the match.

The Oles close out the regular season with a non-conference home match against No. 20-ranked UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. After that, St. Olaf will host sixth-seeded Concordia-Moorhead in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Playoffs on Monday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
