NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team was edged 2-1 by Augsburg University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
Augsburg (5-4-0, 4-2-0 MIAC) got single goals in the first and second period to build a 2-0 lead and held on in the third period. Junior
Kate Carfagnini scored an unassisted goal at 7:32 of the third period to bring St. Olaf (4-7-0, 0-6-0 MIAC) within one, but the Oles could not muster a tying goal in their third one-goal loss of the season in conference play.
Ella Olson tallied the lone goal of the opening period for the Auggies at the 16:28 mark to give Augsburg a slight lead after 20 minutes. The hosts doubled their lead just 2:29 into the second period on a goal by Malia Schubert and protected the 2-0 lead until near the midway point of the third period.
Less than eight minutes into the final period, Carfagnini worked the puck off the boards on the left, skated towards the net, and scored from the sharp angle for her first goal of the season. The goal was Carfagnini's first since her rookie season and the fourth of her career.
The Oles generated 11 shots on goal after Carfagnini's goal and had two power plays in the third period but were unable to get the puck past Marissa Paaske a second time. Paaske made 29 saves in the win for the Auggies, while sophomore
Hannah Fritz stopped 25 shots for the Oles in the loss.
St. Olaf exits MIAC play for a non-conference series against UW-Superior on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 8-9. Puck drop for the series opener is set for 6 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
