NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team cruised to a 5-0 win over UW-Superior to snap a seven-game skid on Friday night at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
St. Olaf (5-7-0) scored twice in the opening seven minutes and added three more goals in the second period on its way to the shutout victory over UW-Superior (4-4-1). The win was the Oles' third in a row in the series with the Yellowjackets, who were 7-2-1 in the all-time series before St. Olaf's road sweep a season ago.
Sophomore
Molly Terebayza broke a four-game goalless drought with her third two-goal game of the season, while sophomore
MaKenna Beaver collected a career-high three assists in just her second-career multi-point game. First year
Julia Larson picked up her first collegiate multi-point performance with a goal and an assist, while junior
Sophie McBane matched her season point total entering the game with a goal and an assist.
After entering the night just 2-for-31 (6.5 percent) on the power play for the season, St. Olaf went 3-for-9 in the win and killed off all five of UW-Superior's power plays. The game featured a combined 16 minor penalties. Sophomore
Hannah Fritz recorded her second shutout of the season by stopping all 19 of the shots on goal the visitors generated.
The Oles scored on two of their first four shots on goal in the game to get out to an early 2-0 lead. Junior
Kate Carfagnini opened the scoring by lifting in a rebound off a shot by Larson just 3:59 in for her second-straight game with a goal. Less than three minutes later, Terebayza fired a wrist shot in under the bar from the right faceoff dot for the first of St. Olaf's three power-play goals.
In the second, St. Olaf added two more power-play goals in a three-goal period. Five minutes into the period, Berg-Messerole fed the puck to an open Larson in front of the net and Larson flung a backhand through the five-hole to make it a 3-0 game. Terebayza added her second of the night at 11:38 before McBane closed the scoring three minutes later with another power-play tally.
The Oles outshot the Yellowjackets by a 34-19 margin in the game and chased starting goaltender Rose Beeman after the second period. Molly Black stopped all seven shots she faced in the third for the visitors.
