Carleton outlasts men's basketball in double overtime

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's basketball team was outlasted by Carleton College by a 70-66 score in double overtime in the first meeting between the crosstown rivals on Monday night at Skoglund Center.

In a game where both teams shot around 35.0 percent from the field and neither team led by more than five points, Luke Harris hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:19 remaining that eventually gave Carleton (3-3, 1-2 MIAC) its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory of the season. St. Olaf (2-5, 1-3 MIAC) led for 30:55 in the game, compared to 10:34 for the Knights.

The win meant that Carleton maintains possession of the Goat Trophy for the fourth-straight season. The game, which featured 13 ties and 12 lead changes, was the first game between the Oles and Knights to go to overtime since back-to-back overtime wins for St. Olaf in the 2002-03 season. It is believed to be the first time in series history (dating back to 1909-10) that the two teams have played a double-overtime game.

Sophomore Kobe Kirk posted his third-straight 20-point game and his second 20-10 performance in the last three games with 23 points and 10 rebounds for St. Olaf, which shot just 35.8 percent (24-for-67) from the field, including 33.3 percent (11-for-33) from three-point range. Senior Connor Martin logged his first-career point-rebound double-double with 13 points, a career-high 12 rebounds, and five assists. Senior Caleb Greer was in double figures in scoring for the first time in his career with 11 points on a 3-for-4 night from behind the arc.

Harris and Matt Banovetz matched Kirk for game-high honors with 23 points apiece, with Banovetz adding 12 rebounds for a double-double. Banovetz and Harris each hit three three-pointers in the game for the Knights, who shot just 34.8 percent (23-for-66) from the field but were 17-for-22 (77.3 percent) at the free-throw line, compared to 7-for-14 (50.0 percent) for the Oles. Carleton also had just eight turnovers in the game while forcing 16 to overcome a night where its bench did not contribute a point.

Kirk was 5-for-9 from the field in a 12-point first half to help St. Olaf to a 29-24 lead at the break. After Carleton scored the first four points, the Oles grabbed the lead 2:20 in on a three-pointer by Martin and led for 17:03 of the half. A bucket by junior Addison Metcalf midway through the half gave St. Olaf the largest lead of the half at 18-13. Kirk scored the final five points of the half for the Oles to keep the hosts on top.

Carleton grabbed its first lead since the score was 11-10 six minutes in with an 8-0 run in the second half that gave the visitors a 38-35 advantage. With the Knights leading 46-43 midway through the half, St. Olaf went on an 8-0 run, which included three-pointers by first year Jachin Mertes and Metcalf, over the span of 1:27 to match the largest lead of the game at 51-46 with 7:39 left. Neither team led by more than two over the final 7:20 of regulation, as Kirk missed a three-pointer at the buzzer after Harris sank a pair of free throws with 19 seconds remaining to tie the game at 56-56.

Martin started the first overtime with a three-pointer before Harris answered with one of his own for the Knights. After that, neither team made a field goal until Kirk connected on a three-pointer with 29 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 63-63. Carleton had the ball with the chance to win it on the final possession, but Harris missed a shot in the paint as the game went to a second overtime.

Kirk scored St. Olaf's lone three points of the second overtime, including a jumper with 2:14 left that put the Oles on top by one at 66-65. After the teams traded defensive stops, Harris, who was just 1-for-9 from behind the arc entering the night, hit his third three-pointer in seven tries with 1:19 to go for the decisive shot. St. Olaf missed a three-pointer on its next possession and, after an offensive rebound kept the Knights in possession, Alex Gibbens made a pair of free throws to seal the win.

The Oles begin a stretch of four-straight road games to close out the calendar year with a trip to Hamline University on Wednesday, Dec. 6 for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
