Hamline pulls away from women's basketball late

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team trailed by just three past the midway point of the fourth quarter before Hamline University pulled away for a 68-55 victory on Wednesday night at Skoglund Center.

Hamlin (5-1, 4-1 MIAC) held a 54-51 lead with 4:37 remaining before outscoring St. Olaf (2-5, 1-3 MIAC) by a 14-4 margin over the remainder of the game. The victory was the 11th in the last 12 meetings in the series for the Pipers.

Junior Sophia Kormann recorded the second double-double of her career, leading the Oles with a career-high 14 points and 10 rebounds, as she reached double figures in scoring for the third time in the last four games. Kormann was one of four double-digit scorers for St. Olaf, which got 11 points and seven rebounds from junior Paige Yagodinski. Junior Sarah Tangen added 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists, while junior Ziling Zhen had 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Michaela Stamer scored a game-high 20 points on 6-for-12 shooting, including going 3-for-5 from three-point range, for Hamline. Kate Trachsel added 14 points and Sophie Stork provided 11 points and six boards off the bench. St. Olaf held Lydia Lecher, who entered the game as the Pipers' leading scorer at over 16 points per game, scoreless on 0-for-7 shooting.

Hamline enjoyed advantages of 24-2 in points off turnovers, 19-4 in second-chance points, and 23-6 in bench scoring to pick up the win despite shooting just 35.3 percent (24-for-68) from the field on the night. St. Olaf shot 41.1 percent (23-for-56) overall but could not overcome a 21-turnover night.

The first quarter featured five lead changes and four ties before Hamline scored the final five points of the quarter to take a 19-14 lead after one. After Kormann capped a seven-point first quarter with a three-point play to tie the game at 14-14, Stork hit a jumper and a three-pointer in the final 30 seconds of the quarter for the Pipers.

Stamer connected on 3-of-4 three-pointers in the second quarter to help Hamline extend its lead to 38-27 at the half. St. Olaf was within three at 26-23 with 4:56 to go in the second before the Pipers went on a 9-0 run to take its first double-figure lead of the night. Stamer's third three-pointer of the quarter gave the visitors their largest lead of the half at 38-25 with 1:01 to go, capping a 15-point first half for Stamer.

St. Olaf held Hamline to 2-for-14 (14.3 percent) shooting in the third quarter to cut its deficit to 46-43 after three. The Oles got within two points three times in the quarter but were unable to get any closer the rest of the way. In the fourth, St. Olaf was down just three after a three-pointer by Yagodinski with 4:37 remaining but scored just four points the rest of the way.

The Oles begin a stretch of three consecutive road games with a trip to Augsburg University on Saturday, Dec. 9 for a 1 p.m. start.
