Men's hockey drops outdoor game to Bethel

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. – Bethel University broke a 1-1 tie with two third-period goals to defeat the St. Olaf College men's hockey team 3-1 in a non-conference outdoor game on Saturday night at the Recreation Outdoor Center.

Bethel (9-2-2) took a 1-0 lead late in the first period before St. Olaf (5-6-2) pulled level in the last two minutes of the second, but the Royals scored just 18 seconds into the third and added an empty-netter in the third meeting between the two programs this season. The game marked the second season in a row the two teams met outdoors at the ROC.

Ben Doherty gave the Royals a 1-0 lead at the first intermission by scoring at the 17:51 mark of the opening period and Bethel held onto the lead until late in the second. With St. Olaf on the power play, senior Noah Heisler tallied his first goal of the season at the 18:15 mark to tie the game at 1-1 after two.

Bethel broke the tie just 18 seconds into the third period, however, on a goal by Logan Anderson. The Royals tacked on an empty-netter with 1:01 to go, which came just eight seconds after a St. Olaf power play expired.

The Oles held a 36-22 advantage in shots on goal in the game, but Austin Ryman made 35 saves for Bethel to earn the win. In just his second start of the season, sophomore Tyler Laureault had 19 saves in the loss.

With the 2023 portion of its season complete, St. Olaf returns to the ice at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5 with a home matchup against UW-Eau Claire.
