Four-point play in closing seconds dooms men's basketball in Winona

WINONA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's basketball team fell victim to a late rally by Saint Mary's University (Minn.) – capped by the game-winning four-point play with four seconds remaining – as the Cardinals edged the Oles, 66-65, on Wednesday night at Saint Mary's Gym.

With St. Olaf (12-9, 8-8 MIAC) leading 65-62, Raheem Anthony banked in a three-pointer with four seconds to go, was fouled on the play, and hit the free throw after a timeout to cap a late rally by Saint Mary's (12-8, 8-7 MIAC). The Oles led by as many as 13 in the second half and were up by 12 with 4:22 remaining before being outscored by a 15-2 margin the rest of the way.

Anthony led all scorers with 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting from the field, including making all four of his three-pointers, while also grabbing nine rebounds for Saint Mary's, which shot 46.6 percent (27-for-58) from the field and 43.5 percent (10-for-23) from three-point range in the win. Owen Ziegler was 5-for-11 from behind the arc on his way to a 19-point night, while Jabari Sawyer added 10 points for the hosts.

First year Kobe Kirk and fifth-year senior Nathan Hendler had 13 points apiece to lead St. Olaf, which shot an identical 46.6 percent (27-for-58) from the field but was just 5-for-17 (29.4 percent) from three-point range in the game. Junior Connor Martin added 12 points and seven assists, dishing out seven-plus assists for the seventh time in the last nine games.

Saint Mary's hit four-straight shots early on as part of a 10-2 start over the first four-plus minutes to take its largest lead of the game, but St. Olaf scored the next eight points to quickly tie it up. The first half featured seven ties and four lead changes, as the Oles closed the opening half on an 8-0 run, including a pair of baskets from junior Caleb Greer, to grab a 33-28 halftime lead.

St. Olaf continued its run early in the second half, taking its largest lead of the game at 47-34 after outscoring Saint Mary's by an 11-2 margin over a three-minute stretch. The Cardinals began to rally midway through the half, trimming their deficit to 53-49 with 9:07 left after an Anthony three-pointer, but Kirk scored seven-straight St. Olaf points and Hendler followed with a three-pointer to put the Oles up a dozen, 63-51, with 4:22 left.

Saint Mary's proceeded to hold St. Olaf scoreless for over four minutes, scoring 11-straight points to get within one on a transition layup by Anthony with 23 seconds to go. After three fouls by the Cardinals put the Oles in the bonus, Kirk sank two free throws to end the St. Olaf drought and give the Oles a three-point lead, but Anthony's four-point play in the closing seconds was the difference.

St. Olaf hosts Augsburg University on Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m.
