ST. PETER, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team split a pair of matches on Saturday, bouncing back from a 9-0 loss to No. 17-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College with a 7-2 victory over Central College at the Swanson Tennis Center.
To start the day, St. Olaf (1-2, 0-1 MIAC) was swept by nationally-ranked Gustavus (3-2, 1-0 MIAC) in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener for both teams. The Oles rebounded by getting a doubles sweep and wins at the top-three singles spots to defeat Central (1-1) in the first meeting between the two programs since 1985.

The Gusties dropped just five games in the three doubles matches and won all six singles matches in straight sets in the Oles' first match of the day. The tightest score line of the day came at No. 2 singles, where first year

Lorenzo Cazzamali picked up four games in his No. 1 singles match with Nick Aney, falling by a 6-2, 6-2 margin. Gustavus lost just four games over eight sets in the other four singles flights.

In its second match of the day, St. Olaf won tight matches at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles as part of a doubles sweep to get out to a 3-0 lead against Central. Needing just two singles points to claim the win, the Oles took four of the six matches to seal the victory.

Joao Costa were both victorious by 8-6 scores at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, respectively, for St. Olaf, which also got an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles from junior

Cazzamali, Vizoli, and Smith recorded straight-set singles victories for the Oles to help secure the team result. Cazzamali won a close second set to close out a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Trey Mevlin at No. 1 singles, while Vizoli logged a 6-4, 6-2 win at the second spot. St. Olaf heads to Rochester for a pair of matches on Saturday, Feb. 18, taking on UW-Eau Claire at 3:30 p.m. and Wartburg College at 6:30 p.m.
