Tuman makes 47 saves for Oles in 1-0 loss at No. 2 Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. – First year Carley Tuman made a career-high 47 saves for the St. Olaf College women's hockey team in a 1-0 series-opening loss to second-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College on Friday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

An unassisted goal from Brooke Power at the 13:14 mark of the opening period was enough to give Gustavus (21-3-0, 16-1-0 MIAC) the victory over St. Olaf (14-8-2, 10-6-1 MIAC). The Oles became just the fourth different team to limit the Gusties – who entered the night already having locked up the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regular-season title – to one or no goals in a game this season.

Towards the tail end of the opening period, Power intercepted a pass in the St. Olaf defensive zone and picked out the top corner for her 14th goal of the season and what proved to be the lone goal of the game. After being outshot by a 40-3 margin over the first two periods, the Oles were outshot just 8-7 over the final 20 minutes but could not find a way past Katie McCoy, who picked up her ninth shutout of the season.

In just her third collegiate start, Tuman recorded 47 saves – nine more than her total from her previous start against Saint Mary's University (Minn.) on Jan. 13 – for St. Olaf, including 21 saves in the first period and 18 more in the second. The Oles had two opportunities on the power play in the third period but were unable to convert.

Entering the final day of the regular season, St. Olaf sits tied for third in the MIAC standings with the College of Saint Benedict on 30 points and will be either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed in the MIAC Playoffs pending Saturday's results. If the Oles and Bennies end up tied on points, seeds will likely be determined by the regulation wins tiebreaker.

Puck drop for St. Olaf's regular-season finale is slated for 3 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena on Saturday, Feb. 18.
