Men's basketball hits road to face Scots in quarterfinals of MIAC Playoffs

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The fifth-seeded St. Olaf College men's basketball team opens the 2023 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Basketball Playoffs by visiting fourth-seeded Macalester College on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

After securing its 10th postseason berth in the last 12 seasons, St. Olaf (14-11, 10-10 MIAC) will take on Macalester (15-10, 11-9 MIAC) in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. at the Leonard Center. The berth in the MIAC Playoffs is also the fourth in a row for the Oles.

Per MIAC policy, admission will be charged for all postseason games. Ticket prices are $11.30 for adults and $3.10 for students (children five and under are free). There is no senior discount and MIAC passes will be honored. Tickets for Tuesday night's game must be purchased online here – cash and credit cards will not be accepted at the door. For those unable to attend in-person, the game will be streamed online and live stats will be available.

Tuesday night's other quarterfinal matchup sees third-seeded Saint Mary's University (Minn.) host sixth-seeded Hamline University at 5 p.m. in Winona. Regular-season champion and top-seeded Carleton College will host the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, while the highest remaining seed will travel to Collegeville to face second-seeded Saint John's University at the same time. The championship game is set for Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. at the site of the highest remaining seed.

Any updates to the schedule based on the forecast for inclement weather in the Twin Cities area will be posted at athletics.stolaf.edu and on the @stolafathletics Twitter and Instagram accounts.

St. Olaf is making its 15th all-time appearance in the MIAC Playoffs and won the tournament in both 2014 and 2016. The Oles are 6-12 all-time in the tournament and have won their quarterfinal games to advance to the semifinals in each of the last two editions of the tournament (2020, 2022). This year marks the third time in its last four appearances that St. Olaf is the No. 5 seed in the tournament.

Macalester is in the MIAC Playoffs for the fifth time in program history after appearing in the tournament for the first time since 2005 last season. As the No. 6 seed last season, the Scots strung together three-straight wins – including defeating No. 3 seed Carleton and No. 2 seed Augsburg University on their home courts – to advance to the championship game, ultimately falling by a 75-71 score to top-seeded Saint John's.

Tuesday night's quarterfinal will be the first-ever postseason meeting between St. Olaf and Macalester. The Oles and Scots split their two regular-season matchups with each team winning on their home court. On Jan. 4, St. Olaf shot a season-best 56.5 percent from the field and broke open a two-point game at the half on its way to an 83-59 victory at Skoglund Center. On Feb. 8 in St. Paul, the Scots hit a game-tying three-pointer with less than one second remaining in regulation and went on to claim an 84-75 overtime win to earn the split.
