Tiebreakers key women's tennis' 5-4 win over Saint Ben's

SARTELL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team won a pair of tiebreakers in doubles and got a clinching super-tiebreaker win from sophomore Olha Zubarieva at No. 1 singles to claim a 5-4 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory over the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday at Sta-Fit.

St. Olaf (4-3, 4-2 MIAC) recorded tiebreaker victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take a lead into singles and got the three points it needed to pick up its fifth-straight victory in the series with Saint Ben's (4-3, 2-1 MIAC). Of the five-straight head-to-head victories for St. Olaf, four have come by 5-4 scores and the other was 6-3.

After CSB put the first point on the board with a win at No. 3 doubles, the Oles got dramatic victories at the top-two spots to grab a 2-1 lead. Zubarieva and senior Allie Prokosch saved match point in their match at No. 1 doubles before winning a tiebreaker, 7-5, to even the score at 1-1 before sophomores Sarah Clark and Jane Spading rallied from 7-4 down to win their No. 2 doubles match in a tiebreaker, 7-4, for St. Olaf's second point.

Prokosch and Zubarieva's win kept them unbeaten (6-0) in MIAC play this season, while Clark and Spading claimed their fifth victory of the season to creep over the .500 mark.

In singles, the Oles got the three points they needed courtesy of victories from Zubarieva, Prokosch, and sophomore Fiona O'Flaherty. Prokosch and O'Flaherty posted straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, in the first matches to finish to stretch St. Olaf's lead to 4-1. Needing to win the final four matches on court, the Bennies registered wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles to get within a 4-3 margin with two matches on court.

Zubarieva provided the clinching point at No. 1 singles for the Oles by outlasting Ashley Tarrolly by a 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 margin after facing a match point to improve to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in MIAC play while running her winning streak to three matches.

St. Olaf heads to Florida for four matches during spring break, beginning with a meeting with George Fox University on Saturday, March 25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
