Zubarieva wins twice, women's tennis falls to nationally-ranked Gusties

ST. PETER, Minn. – Sophomore Olha Zubarieva won both of her matches for the St. Olaf College women's tennis team in a 6-3 loss to No. 38-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday morning at Swanson Tennis Center.

Zubarieva teamed with senior Allie Prokosch for a narrow win at No. 1 doubles before rallying from a set down for a super-tiebreaker victory at No. 1 singles for St. Olaf (2-3, 2-3 MIAC). Perennial conference power Gustavus (5-6, 2-0 MIAC) won its 37th-straight match in the series between the two programs, although the Oles' three points were their most in the series since a 5-4 loss on April 24, 2014.

The Gusties were ranked No. 38 in the country and No. 9 in the Central Region in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) polls released on Jan. 17.

Zubarieva and Prokosch earned their fourth-straight victory (all in MIAC play) by holding off Yuki Oda and Halle Rosentreter for an 8-6 win atop the doubles lineup for St. Olaf. Gustavus took an advantage into singles, however, with 8-1 and 8-3 victories at the other two spots.

In singles, the Gusties secured the team win with straight-set victories at No. 5, No. 2, and No. 3 singles to get to the five necessary points. The Oles won both of the singles matches to go to super tiebreakers, as Zubarieva came back from a set down for a 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 victory at No. 1 singles and sophomore Fiona O'Flaherty recovered from dropping the first set to pick up a 2-6, 6-3, 10-4 win at No. 4 singles.

Zubarieva's win improved her record to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in MIAC play this season, while O'Flaherty also chalked up her fifth victory to more to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in MIAC matches.

St. Olaf heads to Winona on Saturday, March 11 for a 4 p.m. match against Saint Mary's University (Minn.) at Winona Indoor Tennis Club.
