NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In its first home outdoor match of the season, the St. Olaf College women's tennis team was blanked, 9-0, by undefeated and regionally-ranked Carleton College on Monday afternoon at Carlson Courts.
Carleton (15-0, 7-0 MIAC) won each of the three doubles matches by at least four games and claimed five of the six singles matches in straight sets to sweep St. Olaf (6-6, 4-3 MIAC) in the Oles' first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) match since March 18. The Knights were ranked No. 8 in the Central Region in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.
In a matchup of two of the top doubles teams in the region, sophomore
Olha Zubarieva and senior
Allie Prokosch saw their 10-match winning streak come to an end with an 8-4 loss to Amelia Asfaw and Mary Hose at No. 1 doubles. The 10-match winning streak was the longest for a St. Olaf doubles pairing since Erin McDonald and Margaret Zimmermann won their first 14 matches of the 2016-17 campaign.
The Knights picked up an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles and an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles and did not drop more than two games in any set during singles outside of the No. 1 singles match. Zubarieva won the lone set of the day for the Oles by taking the opener before Asfaw rallied for a super-tiebreaker victory atop the singles lineup for Carleton, which has dropped just three individual matches in its seven conference matches this season.
St. Olaf looks to get back in the win column when Concordia-Moorhead visits Carlson Courts for a 1:30 p.m. joint match with the men's programs on Saturday, April 15.
