NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In a matchup of top-15 teams, the No. 14-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer season was defeated 4-2 by the reigning national champion and No. 1-ranked University of Chicago on Friday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
Senior
Victor Gaulmin scored both goals for St. Olaf (0-1-0), including giving the Oles an early lead inside the first five minutes, but Ryan Yetishefsky netted a hat trick to lead UChicago (1-0-0) to the victory. After Gaulmin's opener, Yetishefsky scored the next three goals before Gaulmin made it a one-goal game at the half.
Robbie Pino scored the lone goal of the second half in the 86th minute to seal the victory for UChicago. The game was St. Olaf's first against a team atop the national rankings since 2006 and the third since 1996.
Gaulmin gave the Oles an early lead inside the first five minutes by curling a free kick from outside the box into the lower-right corner of the net, but the Maroons answered just five minutes later on Yetishefsky's first goal of the afternoon to make it 1-1 10 minutes in. Yetishefsky added two more goals eight minutes apart midway through the half to give UChicago a 3-1 lead.
Just over 30 seconds after Yetishefsky's third goal, senior
Liam Vance earned St. Olaf a penalty kick by being taken down near the end line on the left side of the box, and Gaulmin stepped up to convert from the spot to make it a 3-2 game at halftime. The two-goal game was the fourth of Gaulmin's career.
Sophomore
Chaneek Park and first year
Karsten Segall had chances to tie the game for the Oles midway through the second half, but Park's shot from the edge of the six-yard box was saved by Will Boyes in the 59th minute and Segall's shot from inside the box five minutes later was blocked on the line by a UChicago defender.
Senior
Hakeem Morgan flashed a right-footed shot wide from a sharp angle on the right in the 74th minute before curling a left-footed shot just wide of the left post from the top of the box minutes later. The Marrons sealed the win on Pino's goal in the final five minutes.
Both teams recorded 14 shots in the game, although UChicago held an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal and had five of the game's six corner kicks. Boyes had just one save in the win for the Maroons, while junior
