Men's soccer blanked at Kenyon in top-15 encounter

GAMBIER, Ohio – In its third top-25 matchup in four games to start the season, the No. 14-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team was blanked 2-0 by fifth-ranked Kenyon College on Sunday at Mavec Field.

Kenyon (2-2-0) got goals early in each half to shut out St. Olaf (1-3-0) in the first-ever matchup between the two programs. The Oles doubled up the Owls by a 20-10 margin in shots in the game but managed just four shots on goal, compared to seven for the hosts. The game featured a combined 37 fouls, 23 of which were committed by Kenyon, and six yellow cards.

At the end of play, seniors Victor Gaulmin and Hakeem Morgan were named to the Fred Myers/adidas(R) Invitational All-Tournament Team. Morgan netted St. Olaf's lone goal over the team's two games in Ohio.

For the second time in three days, St. Olaf fell behind inside the first four minutes, as Alem Duratovic opened the scoring for Kenyon just 3:29 in by slotting the ball home after being slipped in by Joaquin Sanchez-Korenfeld. The Oles nearly struck back quickly, but Kenyon goalkeeper Jack Pedreschi made a leaping save to stop Morgan's left-footed shot off a cutback from classmate Casey McCloskey less than three minutes later.

Junior Peter Forseth was called into action less than two minutes after Morgan's effort, as Forseth got down to thwart Sanchez-Korenfeld's shot from close range after a turnover deep in the St. Olaf defensive end. Forseth helped keep the Oles' deficit at 1-0 midway through the half by producing a quick-reaction save on a header by Sanchez-Korenfeld.

The Oles came close to an equalizer in the 39th minute, when Gaulmin slipped Morgan in on the right side of the box, but Pedreschi got a piece of Morgan's shot to concede a corner. On the ensuing corner, sophomore Caspar Olseth steered a header just wide of the far post.

Kenyon struck for the lone goal of the second half in the 51st minute, as Ben Lantz scored on a looping header off a long throw by Aidan Burns. Pedreschi had just two saves to make the rest of the way despite St. Olaf having the bulk of the possession. The Oles held a 59-41 advantage in possession over the course of the 90 minutes.

Pedreschi collected the shutout victory with a four-save game for Kenyon, while Forseth took the loss with a five-save day.

St. Olaf returns to Minnesota to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play against Bethel University at home on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m.
