Oles open MIAC play with come-from-behind win over Royals

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team opened Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Bethel University on Tuesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

After Bethel (2-1-1, 0-1-0 MIAC) opened the scoring inside the final two minutes of the opening half, first years Emily Johnson and Roxanne Rundle scored in the second half to give St. Olaf (3-2-0, 1-0-0 MIAC) the come-from-behind win. The victory was the Oles' third in a row and was the sixth-straight meeting in the series decided by a single goal.

St. Olaf outshot Bethel by a 13-4 margin in the opening half, but it was the visitors who netted the lone goal of the half to carry a slender advantage into the break. With time winding down in the half, Hannah Kvant evaded a couple of defenders near the top of the box and unleashed a left-footed shot into the right side of the goal for her sixth goal of the season.

It didn't take long for the Oles to begin their rally in the second half, as Johnson tallied her team-leading third goal of the season in the 53rd minute to tie it up. After receiving a pass from senior Reiley Prueter, Johnson weaved her way into the box and scored on a deflected shot that rolled past the Bethel goalkeeper to make it 1-1.

Rundle broke the deadlock in the 66th minute with her first collegiate goal, which came off an assist from sophomore Clara Kubis. Kubis got in down the left wing and pulled the ball back to the top of the box for Rundle, who curled a left-footed shot inside the left post. The assist was the second of Kubis' career.

Senior Maddie Black made a season-high seven saves, including one in a one-on-one with Kvant in the 81st minute to keep the game level, while picking up the victory. Kate Green had eight saves in the loss for the visitors. St. Olaf held a 25-11 advantage in shots in the game, although the margin in shots on goal was closer at 11-8.

The Oles look to continue their winning streak on Saturday, Sept. 16 with a 1 p.m. kickoff at St. Catherine University.
