NEW ORLEANS, La. – Senior
Will Kelly of the St. Olaf College men's cross country team was selected as the Everything Track & Field NCAA Division III Men's National Athlete of the Week, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday afternoon.
Kelly became the third student-athlete in program history to be named M-F Athletic National Athlete of the Week during the cross country season, joining Grant Wintheiser '15 (Oct. 6, 2014) and Jake Campbell '16 (Sept. 21, 2015), after breaking the meet record at the 52nd St. Olaf Invitational on Saturday.
On Saturday, Kelly broke Wintheiser's nine-year-old meet record of 24:52.6 by five seconds with a winning time of 24:47.30 to lead No. 13-ranked St. Olaf to the team title on its home course. The senior's time was nearly 30 seconds faster than the second-place finisher, as he topped Wintheiser's time from 2014, a season that saw Wintheiser go on to win the NCAA Division III individual national title.
Kelly and the Oles return to competition at the Blugold Invitational on Friday, Sept. 29 at 4:30 p.m. at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wis.
