NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team and regionally-ranked UW-Eau Claire played to a scoreless tie in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
St. Olaf (3-3-1) outshot UW-Eau Claire (4-1-2) by margins of 15-7 overall and 7-1 in shots on goal throughout the 90 minutes and hit the woodwork twice before being forced to settle for a tie. The Blugolds, who saw their four-game winning streak in the series come to an end, were ranked No. 6 in Region IX in this week's United Soccer Coaches Regional Poll.
First year
Emily Johnson fired a pair of shots on goal in the opening five minutes and sophomore
Cat Duffy-Shaw added one of her own in the 19th minute for St. Olaf. The Oles came the closest to scoring in the opening half in the 33rd minute, as senior
Marissa Lindaman's shot from outside the box hit squarely off the crossbar.
In the second half, it was Johnson's turn to be denied by the woodwork, as the first year's left-footed shot from near the top of the box caromed off the left post. Junior
Faith Yi was nearly the hero for the Oles inside the final minute of the game, but her shot from near the top of the six-yard box was kept out by a combination of a UW-Eau Claire defender and goalkeeper Kennedy Boll.
The Blugolds' lone shot on goal in the game was a simple save for senior
Maddie Black in the 89th minute. Black picked up her second shutout of the season – the sixth of her career – in the tie for St. Olaf, while Boll kept out all seven of the Oles' shots on goal for the visitors.
St. Olaf returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play at home against the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 3:30 p.m. for Senior Day and Family Weekend.
