NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team and the College of St. Scholastica played to a 1-1 tie in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action on Saturday afternoon at a soggy Rolf Mellby Field.
In a game played in a near-constant downpour that included a lightning delay of over an hour beginning at halftime, St. Olaf (3-3-2, 1-1-1 MIAC) used a first-half goal from sophomore
Abbie Manhard to take a 1-0 lead at the break, but St. Scholastica (0-6-1, 0-1-1 MIAC) got a goal in the final 20 minutes from Abigail Shrode to force the tie. The tie broke the Saints' nine-game losing streak that dated back to last season.
The Oles outshot the Saints by an 11-0 margin in the opening 45 minutes but had to settle for a 1-0 lead following Manhard's first collegiate goal. The goal came off assists from first years
Roxanne Rundle and
Emily Johnson, as Rundle played the ball out wide on the right to Johnson, who send a one-time cross into the box for Manhard to turn home in front.
Shortly after the halftime whistle, the game was halted for roughly 80 minutes due to lightning in the area. After the restart, St. Scholastica was able to capitalize on its lone shot on goal of the game when Shrode slid the ball home from the left side of the box off a pass from Tenley Voth.
St. Olaf took 20 of the game's 22 shots, including nine of the 10 shots on goal, and had 12 of the game's 14 corner kicks, but Gracie Meagher made eight saves to help St. Scholastica claim a point.
The game was Senior Day for St. Olaf's five-member senior class of
Maddie Black,
Marissa Lindaman,
Addison Cortinas,
Reiley Prueter, and
Bella Woog. The class has helped the Oles to 19 wins over the course of their careers, including the program's first-ever victory in the MIAC Playoffs last season.
The Oles venture across town to face Carleton College on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m.
