Black, Oles claim point with tie at regionally-ranked Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie with regionally-ranked Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Wednesday at Bell Field.

Senior Maddie Black made a vital save in each half to help St. Olaf (3-3-3, 1-1-2 MIAC) earn a point by holding Carleton (7-1-1, 3-0-1 MIAC) to a scoreless tie on its home field. The Knights entered the game with an 11-1-1 mark at home since the start of last season, including a 4-0-0 mark this season, and were ranked fourth in this week's United Soccer Coaches Region IX poll.

Carleton doubled up St. Olaf in overall shots (14-6) and shots on goal (6-3) over the course of the 90 minutes, but Black picked up her third shutout of the season and the seventh of her career with a six-save afternoon. The Oles have allowed just one goal over their last three games, which have all ended in ties.

The Knights took nine of the game's 12 shots in the first half and came close to scoring on three occasions but were unable to get on the board. In the 21st minute, Black leapt to keep out a long-range shot by Kathryn Kresse that was headed towards the top-right corner of the goal.

Fifteen minutes later, Carleton won a corner kick that led to a shot in the box for Loren Arzayus, but the forward's shot ricocheted straight into Black's arms. Less than a minute after that, Cate Patterson fired a long-distance effort that hit off the underside of the cross bar and stayed out. St. Olaf's best scoring chance of the half came in the final four minutes when sophomore Cat Duffy-Shaw's corner kick somehow evaded everyone in a congested six-yard box and rolled away to safety.

The second half produced fewer clear-cut scoring chances, although Black was called into action with 15 minutes remaining but was able to get down quickly to get a hand to a Kresse shot and keep it out. The Oles had the final opportunity of the game on a corner kick in the final 30 seconds but could not get on the end of the ball into the box.

The tie marked just the third time in the last 10 meetings that the Oles claimed at least a point off of the Knights and snapped Carleton's four-game winning streak in the series, while maintaining Carleton's unbeaten record (4-0-2) in the last six meetings at Bell Field.

St. Olaf returns to Rolf Mellby Field to face Macalester College on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 3:30 p.m.
