NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team got two goals from senior
Hakeem Morgan on its way to a 3-1 victory over the College of St. Scholastica in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
St. Scholastica (2-6-0, 0-3-0 MIAC) took an early lead on a fourth-minute goal by Tommy Zuzek, but Morgan tied the game for St. Olaf (4-3-0, 2-0-0 MIAC) in the 31st minute to send the teams into the halftime break all square. In the second half, goals from senior
Victor Gaulmin and Morgan helped the Oles remain one of three unbeaten teams in conference play.
Morgan's two-goal performance marked the fifth time in his career the Costa Rican has scored at least two goals in a game and brought his career total to 29, moving him into sole possession of sixth place on the program's all-time list. The four-point output also moved Morgan into fifth in program history with 78 points.
Zuzek gave the Saints an early advantage by scoring a counter-attacking goal off a through ball by Andres Gradilla. The goal came on one of the visitors' two first-half shots and one of their three shots on goal for the entire game. Morgan got his first goal of the game on a free kick in the 31st minute, bending the ball inside the left post to tie the game.
Less than seven minutes into the second half, Gaulmin tallied his fourth goal of the season by putting home a rebound after junior
Shea Bechtel's shot in the box was kept out by St. Scholastica goalkeeper Liam Lothian. The assist was the 27th of Bechtel's career, bringing him within seven of the program record held by John Zietlow '11.
The Saints went down a player after receiving two yellow cards in the space of three minutes with a half hour remaining. St. Olaf got an insurance goal from Morgan in the 74th minute, as the senior fired the ball in from close range after his initial shot was blocked.
The Oles outshot the Saints by a 25-6 margin overall and an 11-3 margin in shots on goal in the game. St. Olaf also had all 18 of the game's corner kicks. Junior
Peter Forseth picked up the win with a two-save afternoon for the Oles, while Lothian took the loss despite making eight saves.
St. Olaf heads across town to take on nationally-ranked Carleton College on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 4 p.m.
