ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team made it two wins in as many nights to begin Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play by taking down Hamline University in four sets on Saturday night at Hutton Fieldhouse.
After defeating Bethel University in four sets in its home opener on Friday night, St. Olaf (7-4, 2-0 MIAC) picked up its third four-set victory in a row by topping Hamline (3-7, 0-2 MIAC) by scores of 25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16. The win was the Oles' seventh in a row over the Pipers dating back to 2017.
Senior
Catherine Moore led four Oles in double figures in kills with a match-high 17 – one shy of her season-high total from Friday night – while hitting .289 in the win. Junior
Maycie Rogers added 15 – the second-highest total of her career – while first year
Maren Miller had 11 and senior
Anysia Caille contributed 10. Miller needed just 18 swings to compile her 11 kills, doing so with just one attack error.
Sophomore
Paige Christophersen made it back-to-back double-doubles with 26 assists and 14 digs, while first year
Skylar Fildew added 20 assists and six digs, as the duo helped St. Olaf rack up 61 kills on the night. Fifth-year senior
Selena Rodriguez registered the fifth double-double of her career with 25 digs, 11 assists, and three aces.
Despite Hamline recording five aces and six blocks in the opening set, St. Olaf found a way to win it while hitting just .095 in the set. After the Oles led by as many as eight at 14-6, the Pipers fought back late in the set to tie it at 21-21 and 23-23, but a kill by Caille and a block by Caille and senior
Erica Collin gave St. Olaf the set.
St. Olaf got its offense going in set two, hitting .355 in the set behind five kills from Moore and four apiece from Rogers and Miller. The Oles led by just two at 18-16 before winning five points in a row to start a 7-1 close to the set that gave St. Olaf a two-set advantage.
In the third, the Oles overcame a 15-10 deficit to tie the set at 18-18, 19-19, 20-20, and 21-21, but the Pipers extended the match to a fourth set by winning four of the final six points of the set. St. Olaf saved one set point on a kill by Moore before the hosts got a kill from Elizabeth Lopata to win the set that included 10 ties and four lead changes.
Led by five kills on six errorless swings from Moore and 11 digs from Rodriguez in the set, St. Olaf closed out the win in the fourth. Moore recorded a pair of kills in a 7-1 start to the set for the Oles, who led by at least four the rest of the way.
