Berns and Zubarieva win singles draws at ITA Alternative

ST. PETER, Minn. – Eight members of the St. Olaf College women's tennis team got their fall seasons under way by competing at the Gustavus Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Alternative on Friday and Saturday at Wilkinson Tennis Complex.

Junior Olha Zubarieva, sophomore Alexandra Berns, junior Gabby Trapero, sophomore Polly Danylova, first year Charlotte Sloane, and first year Elliana Loesch represented the Oles in the singles draws, while the pairings of Berns/Zubarieva, senior Anna Secor/Trapero, and Sloane/Danylova played in the doubles draws. Berns and Zubarieva both won their eight-player brackets in singles with 3-0 weekends.

Zubarieva did not drop more than three games in any of her matches on the way to winning her eight-player bracket. After a 6-0, 6-1 win over Emily Henderson of Saint Mary's University in the opening round, the junior posted 8-3 victories over Sophia Fain of Coe College and Raquel Egge of Concordia-Moorhead in the semifinals and finals.

Berns ran through her bracket of eight as well, beginning with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Carlie Miller of Coe College. The sophomore followed that up by defeating Madison Packer of Gustavus Adolphus College in a tiebreaker, 7-5, to advance to the championship, where she picked up an 8-0 win over Annie Orvis of the University of Northwestern.

Trapero, Sloane, and Loesch all picked up one victory in their singles brackets, highlighted by Loesch's 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 win over Daylyn Drew of UW-Superior in her opening-round match.

In doubles, Berns and Zubarieva won the consolation portion of Doubles Draw #1, rebounding from an opening-round loss with victories over duos from Saint Mary's University and Concordia-Moorhead. St. Olaf's other two pairings both went 1-2, with Secor and Trapero winning their final match and Sloane and Danylova getting the first doubles win of their careers via a 6-0 triumph over Annalise Skrade and Ava Lowman of Concordia-Moorhead.

St. Olaf travels to Moorhead to face the Cobbers in its first of two fall Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matches on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 1:30 p.m.
