Johnson's early goal not enough for women's soccer against St. Norbert

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – First year Emily Johnson gave the St. Olaf College women's soccer team an early lead, but St. Norbert College rallied with one goal in either half to defeat the Oles by a 2-1 score on Sunday at Rolf Mellby Field.

Johnson tallied her first collegiate goal inside the first three minutes to get St. Olaf (0-2-0) out to a quick lead, but St. Norbert (1-1-0) got a goal in the final two minutes of the first half and another in the second half to grab the victory. The Oles outshot the Green Knights by a 25-7 margin, including a 9-3 count in shots on goal, in the game and had 11 of the game's 15 corner kicks.

The game's kickoff was moved up to 11:30 a.m. to avoid playing in the heat of the day with mid-90s temperatures later in the afternoon.

Less than three minutes in, sophomore Cat Duffy-Shaw played a ball in behind the St. Norbert back line that Johnson got on the end of before firing a shot to the lower-left portion of the net. Despite behind outshot 12-3 overall and 5-1 in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, the Green Knights found a tying goal in the 44th minute when Abigail Rabideau nodded in a looping header in front following a corner kick.

The Oles held a 13-4 advantage in shots in the second half and had 10 corner kicks in the second half, but St. Norbert found the lone goal of the half when Abby Moore fired a shot from the top of the box to the lower-right corner in the 63rd minute. Shortly before Moore's goal, sophomore Katie Beaudry was inches from giving St. Olaf a 2-1 lead but saw her header from a corner graze the top of the crossbar.

Klara Banemark picked up the win for the visitors after making seven saves, while senior Maddie Black had just one save in the loss.

St. Olaf hits the road for the first time this season with a trip to Wartburg College for a 6 p.m. kickoff on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
