Men's soccer settles for 1-1 tie with No. 21 Macalester after late goal

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team fell victim to a goal in the final 10 seconds in a 1-1 tie with No. 21-ranked Macalester College on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

A free-kick goal by senior Victor Gaulmin in the 62nd minute gave St. Olaf (5-3-1, 3-0-1 MIAC) a lead the Oles held onto until the final 10 seconds when Elijah Edelman curled home the game-tying goal for Macalester (6-1-4, 2-1-2 MIAC). The tie extended St. Olaf's unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1) and was the Oles' fifth against a nationally-ranked team already this season. The Scots were ranked No. 3 and the Oles were No. 8 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Region IX poll.

Prior to the game, St. Olaf honored its 12-member senior class of Gaulmin, Austin Williams, Jordan Oberholtzer, Leo Dixon, Ian Elliott, Zac Harvey-Latham, Clemente Arcuch Puig, Hakeem Morgan, Casey McCloskey, Ethan Kilmer, Jonah Dean, and Liam Vance, as well as their families, on the field. Since the start of the 2021 season, the class has helped the Oles to the sixth-most wins in the country and a pair of "Sweet 16" appearances, as well as a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regular-season title and an MIAC Playoff title.

Morgan came the closest to opening the scoring in the first half by hitting the crossbar on a header shortly after a corner kick in the 12th minute. St. Olaf held advantages of 7-5 in overall shots and 4-3 in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

With the game still scoreless, Gaulmin bent home a free kick from 25 yards out in the 62nd minute to give the Oles the lead with his fifth goal of the season. The senior has scored in three of St. Olaf's last four matches and his five-goal total trails only Morgan's total of eight on the team.

With St. Olaf still maintaining the 1-0 lead, Macalester got the ball into the box in the final 20 seconds and the ball eventually came to Grant Luce, who rolled the ball back to Elijah Edelman, who curled the ball into the top-left corner of the goal with 8.8 seconds remaining to earn the Scots a point.

Macalester owned a 15-11 advantage in shots and a 9-7 edge in shots on goal for the game. Junior Peter Forseth made a season-high eight saves for the Oles, while Sam Price had six stops for the Scots. With the tie, St. Olaf sits in second place in the MIAC standings with 10 points, two behind Carleton College, which has played one more game than the Oles.

St. Olaf plays its next three games on the road, starting with a trip to take on UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
