Volleyball goes 1-1 at home triangular

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team split a pair of four-set matches at the St. Olaf Triangular on Saturday, defeating Nebraska Wesleyan before dropping a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) match to Saint Mary's University at Skoglund Center.

In the first match of the triangular, St. Olaf (9-5, 2-1 MIAC) recovered from dropping the first set to record an 18-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-15 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan (11-6). Later in the evening, Saint Mary's (8-12, 1-3 MIAC) flipped the script on the Oles by winning the final three sets after losing the first in a 20-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-20 win for the visitors.

St. Olaf looks to get back in the win column on Friday, Oct. 6 in a 7 p.m. road match against Carleton College.

St. Olaf 3, Nebraska Wesleyan 1 | Box Score

After hitting just .028 in the opening set, St. Olaf hit .385 over the final three sets to rally for the four-set win over Nebraska Wesleyan in the first meeting between the two programs since 2014. Senior Catherine Moore, senior Anysia Caille, and first year Maren Miller were all in double figures in kills in the win.

Moore recorded a match-high 15 kills to reach double figures for the sixth match in a row and hit .444 for St. Olaf, which hit .283 as a team in the match. Caille had double-digit kills for the eighth match in a row with 11, while Miller needed just 16 swings to tally 10 kills with a .563 attack percentage.

Sophomore Paige Christophersen logged her third double-double in four matches with 23 assists and 12 digs, while first year Skylar Fildew pitched in with 16 assists, six digs, and a career-high four aces. Fifth-year senior Selena Rodriguez totaled a match-high 16 digs to go with six assists for the Oles.

St. Olaf fell behind 4-0 in the opening set and never recovered, as the Prairie Wolves led the entire way after the strong start. The Oles got within three at 17-14 on an ace by Christophersen, but the visitors won six of the next seven points to extend their lead to eight.

Moore carried the load offensively for St. Olaf in set two, tallying seven kills on eight errorless swings to help the Oles hit .368 as a team in the set. St. Olaf used a 10-0 run to take an early 12-5 advantage, but Nebraska Wesleyan battled back to get within one at 17-16. Moore had kills on four of the next eight points to keep the Oles ahead before Caille recorded kills on St. Olaf's final two points of the set.

In the third, St. Olaf led by six early before the visitors closed to within one at 14-13 with a 5-0 run. Leading 15-14, the Oles went on a 6-1 run of their own to open up a 21-15 lead and closed out the set thanks, in part, to two late aces by Fildew. Miller had a set-high five kills on six swings in the third.

The Oles finished off the four-set win by hitting an even .500 with 16 kills and just two attack errors in the fourth, getting five kills apiece from Miller and Moore in the set. St. Olaf turned an 11-9 lead into an 18-10 cushion with a 7-1 run and led by at least seven the rest of the way.

Trailing 15-14, the Oles won seven of the next nine points to take a 21-17 lead as part of a stretch that saw St. Olaf win 10-of-13 points. The Cardinals saved a pair of set points after trailing 24-18 before a service error gave the Oles the set.

Saint Mary's opened up a 17-10 lead in the second set before St. Olaf got within three at 20-17. After the teams alternated winning the next six points, the Cardinals won back-to-back points on a kill by Faith VanErp and an ace by Kali Olson to even the match at a set apiece.

St. Olaf surged out to a 5-1 lead early in the third behind a pair of early kills by Van Scoyoc, but Saint Mary's used a 6-1 run midway through the set to take a 15-13 lead and held onto it the rest of the way. The Cardinals hit at a .306 clip – their highest of the match – in the set to win it despite Van Scoyoc delivering six kills for the Oles.
